Ground Source Heat Pumps and Air Source Heat Pumps

Heat pumps are an excellent alternative to heating your home and can significantly lower your energy bills.
Ground source heat pumps work by extracting heat from the ground through pipes which are buried underground; the heat obtained can then be transferred into usable heat for your home or business. The heat can be used for space heating, as well as the heating of hot water in the home.
Air source heat pumps work by absorbing heat from the outside air, similar to the way in which a refrigerator extracts heat from the inside. The heat captured can then be used to heat many things from the water in your home, to your under floor heating systems, radiators and air heating systems.

Are heat pumps only suitable for new builds? - click here
No. On a new build project it is difficult to think of a better solution than a heat pump for the space heating and hot water. They are certainly not limited to new build properties though hence the government now incentivising people to replace their existing fossil fuel boilers with a heat pump. Before installing any heating system, every measure that can be taken cost effectively to insulate the property should be taken as this will improve the performance of the heating system. The better the insulation in the property, the less hard the heat pump will need to work minimising the running costs and maximising the lifetime of the equipment. Heat pumps will, if designed correctly still offer huge running cost savings on older properties compared to Oil or LPG.
How much land is required for a ground source? - click here
The amount of land required for a ground source heat pump is dependent on several factors such as size of heat pump, type of ground loop and soil conditions. If doing a horizontal trench a general rule of thumb is that it will need 2.5 times the floor area of the property but this is only a rough estimate. Is the domestic hot water produced not very hot? - click here
Both air and ground source heat pumps generally store the domestic hot water that comes out of your taps at around 55’c. This is hot enough to scald human skin so it would not make sense to lower the efficiency of the heat pump in order to produce warmer water. Most experts recommend that hot water temperature should not exceed 51.66° C. A water temperature exceeding this poses serious risk of bad burns, particularly to children. In fact even at 51.66° C, if the child puts his or her hand in the water continuously for two minutes he or she may get second or third degree burns.
Are the units are noisy? - click here
No. Heat pumps are generally very quiet. A ground source heat pump unit can be located anywhere within a property and the noise generated would not be sufficient to cause a problem. The easiest thing to compare the intermittent sound it makes is to compare it to the light humming sound that a refrigerator makes. Air source heat pumps are also very quiet but when stood next to one you can hear the airflow being pulled through the fan. They are generally fitted with anti-vibration pads so this airflow is the only noise heard and would not be noticed inside a well insulated property. SolarTech would always carry out a noise assessment prior to installing a heat pump to ensure that it would not cause a problem for the customer or any neighbouring properties.
Do heat pumps only work with underfloor heating? - click here
No. In order to optimise the performance of the heat pump you want to be able to run it at the lowest possibly flow temperature. In order to do this the distribution system (radiators or underfloor) needs to have a large enough surface area to distribute the heat. Naturally underfloor heating is ideal because your entire floor then becomes the radiator and in most cases a flow temperature as low as 35’c can be run whilst maintaining the design temperature in each room. This doesn’t mean that radiators shouldn’t be used though; in most retrofit cases the disturbance caused by installing underfloor means it is not feasible or desirable. In these instances radiators are absolutely fine but should be sized correctly. SolarTech can advise following a survey the required radiator sizes for each room.
